This week’s theme was patriotism. I wanted to take a picture that captures some of my ambivalence about the topic. On the one hand, my Christian identity far transcends my national identity, but on the other hand I appreciate the security, freedoms, and culture (some of it, anyways) of the U.S. I found the image I was looking for in this memorial that was down on West Beach on Memorial Day. Crosses had been set up to honor the American soldiers who had died in Iraq, but the other costs of the war, specifically money and the many Iraqi deaths, were also acknowledged.
