Homeless, Jobless, and on the Road

September 2nd, 2006 by Jason · 4 Comments

Yesterday was my last day of work at Brooks Institute as a web developer.  In three days we’ll be out of our house in Santa Barbara and headed for Seattle.  We have no house (yet) and no job (yet) (which is wierd—I haven’t been jobless, if you count school, since 9th grade!).  The whole move thing started when we decided to make a go of it a month ago and it has been one heck of a whirlwind since (if you are ever looking for certain ways to add stress to your marriage and decrease your sleep I highly recommend moving).  We’re moving in part for the adventure of it.  We’re still childless, own no house, and have a hankering to try a new city.  Of course with Seattle being a big city there are also way more opportunities for working in the non-profit world or teaching theology at the high school level (my two current job ideas).

All that is basically a warmup to solicit for information.  Our current plan is to drop off our stuff in Seattle and do a two and a half week camping trip with us and the dog through British Columbia.  So, if you have must-sees, must-dos, great restaurants, out-of-the-way campsites, good churches, or general advice about Seattle or Canada camping it would be great to hear it.

Jason, Congrats on the move to the northwest! Definitely check out l’Arche Seattle while you are there. Also, since the Buffit money came to Gates foundation, they are hiring twice the staff in the seattle area. You may know this already, but there is a tax stipulation that in the first year the charity needs to give away 100% of the donation. After that it gradually decreases every year, can go to staff, into bonds, whatever. But for now it’s spend spend spend.

    Check it out.

Wow, Jason and Nance! Sounds like an adventure! I must admit I am somewhat sad to have fewer reasons to visit Santa Barbara, but I’ve never been to Seattle, so I guess I have increasing reason to go that way. All the best for the move and resettling. Keep us posted.

Hey Anthony, I’ll check that out. We’re in Radium Hot Springs now and it looks to be great.

Mel, thanks for the great idea of the Bill Gates foundation. I’ll definitely take a look.

Brooke, you’ll definitely have to make your way to Seattle—we’ve actually got a house with a guest room now! :)
